CBD E-Liquid Guide

CBD vape juice, also called e-liquid CBD, is a concentration containing cannabidiol (CBD) specifically formulated for use in a vaporiser or e-cigarette. It combines CBD (in isolate, broad-spectrum, or full-spectrum form) with propylene glycol (PG), vegetable glycerin (VG), and food-grade flavourings. It's non-psychoactive, nicotine-free, and legal in the UK provided THC levels remain within the legal limit.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of over 100 naturally occurring chemical compounds, known as cannabinoids, found in the cannabis plant. CBD is extracted from hemp (industrial cannabis) and is distinct from THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the compound responsible for the psychoactive effects associated with recreational cannabis use.

The human body has an endocannabinoid system that interacts with cannabinoid intake. When you absorb cannabinoids, CB1 and CB2 receptors in the brain and nervous system bind to them, triggering their effects. Unlike THC, CBD produces no intoxicating response; it won't get you high.

Despite its notoriety for alternative uses, cannabis is the name of a plant genus that covers both hemp and marijuana, and CBD comes specifically from hemp, also referred to as industrial hemp, which is cultivated for a wide range of commercial uses. The defining difference is THC content: hemp contains very low levels of THC, while marijuana is bred for high THC content. CBD derived from hemp carries none of the psychoactive properties associated with marijuana.

CBD is legal in the UK, but the regulatory conditions have become more detailed in recent years, and it's worth understanding the current position clearly.

The operative rule, as confirmed by updated Home Office guidance in October 2024, is that CBD products must contain no more than 1 mg of cannabinoids per product container under the Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2001. Products containing controlled levels above that threshold remain prohibited under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971.

You may have seen "less than 0.2% THC" on older product labelling. This figure relates to the THC content of the source hemp plant at cultivation and is still commonly referenced, but the product-level rule that directly applies to what's in your bottle is the 1 mg per container limit. Reputable CBD brands, including Vapoholic, provide certificates of analysis (COAs) from independent labs to confirm compliance.

CBD cannot get you high. In fact, cannabis plants that are high in CBD are naturally lower in THC, and Vapoholic's CBD Calm range does not contain psychoactive THC, certified to meet the legal THC threshold.

That said, CBD is widely considered a nootropic, and users regularly report a range of calming and focusing effects. People use CBD for relaxation, improved focus, and a better mood. These are distinct from the intoxicating effects of THC; they're the reason CBD has built such a following as a daily wellness product.

Raw CBD comes in a few distinct forms, and the form affects how it's processed into vape-ready e-liquid.

Crystallisation in an e-liquid CBD isn't a sign that your product has spoiled or is low quality. If anything, it's the opposite. It happens because CBD's natural state is crystalline, meaning that when a high-concentration liquid gets too cold, the CBD begins to revert toward that natural form. The more CBD per ml, the faster and more readily it can happen.

A pink tinge in your CBD e-liquid is a natural occurrence and doesn't affect quality or flavour. Pure plant-derived CBD oil contains compounds including polyphenols and medium-chain triglyceride oils. One of these, the Polyphenol Oxidase enzyme, reacts with exposure to oxygen and light, producing a light pink colour. Its presence actually signals a contaminant-free, 100% pure extract.

Highly concentrated e-liquid CBDs can show this pinkness almost immediately after manufacturing. It's a quirk of quality, not a defect.

CBD E-liquid delivers cannabidiol into your bloodstream via your lungs. It reaches peak plasma concentration within 5–10 minutes, having bioavailability of 11–45%, higher than oral administration.

But not everybody feels the effects of CBD in the same way, to the same degree, or within the same timeframe. Still, what users report covers a fairly consistent set of experiences. People describe a sense of calm without sedation, an easing of tension, and in some cases, a clearer sense of focus.

CBD e-liquid works best in low-wattage devices: pod kits and MTL (mouth-to-lung) devices that replicate the draw of a cigarette. High-wattage sub-ohm devices aren't ideal because they vaporise liquid too aggressively, and you'd consume your CBD too quickly with less control over your intake.

If you're new to CBD vaping, start with a lower-strength product and give your body time to register the effects before you vape more. Because it's absorbed quickly, you'll know within minutes whether you want to continue your session. Build up gradually from there.

CBD e-liquid and CBD oil come from the same source, but they're not interchangeable. CBD oil is the base, while CBD e-liquid is what happens when that oil is expertly blended with PG and VG into a form that's safe and effective to inhale. It's why there is no such thing as a generic CBD oil for vapes, and you should never simply pour a CBD oil tincture into your vape tank.

That said, CBD oil is a genuinely useful product in its own right and pairs well with a vaping routine. Our CBD Calm Oil is designed for sublingual (under-the-tongue) administration. There's no universal answer here. The right daily dose depends on the individual, including your body weight, tolerance, and what you're using CBD for. The strength of the product matters too. A lower-strength CBD e-liquid delivers a much lower dose per ml than a high-concentration product in the same size bottle.

Our advice is always to start low and build up slowly. Try a smaller number of puffs across the day instead of one long session, and pay attention to how you feel over the course of 30 to 60 minutes. From that point, strengthen it gradually.

Vaping CBD is the fastest method of absorption. Peak effects are typically felt within the timeframes below.

The duration of effects is equally variable by individual and method. Vaping tends to produce shorter-duration effects than sublingual administration, partly because the same efficiency that speeds absorption also means your body processes it more quickly.

CBD presence in the body varies, but there are useful markers to work from. Most people clear CBD from their system within 2 to 5 days of regular use. Occasional or single-use intake tends to clear faster, often within 24 hours. Heavy, daily use over a sustained period can extend that window to a week or more.

The method of delivery plays a part too. Because vaping delivers CBD efficiently and quickly, it also tends to leave the system faster than orally ingested CBD, which lingers longer as it's processed through the digestive tract. Think of it this way: the faster in, the faster out.

Some people, particularly those new to CBD who start at too high a dose, report a temporary increase in anxiety. It's one of the reasons we recommend starting slowly. Most reported anxiety reactions tied to CBD products have been associated with unregulated products containing higher-than-stated THC levels. It's another argument for buying from brands that publish their lab results openly.

As for headaches, they are sometimes attributed to CBD vaping, but are more likely due to the dehydrating effect of PG or simply vaping more than you're used to. So, make sure to hydrate properly while vaping.

CBD acts as an inhibitor of certain enzymes in the liver responsible for metabolising prescribed medications. If those enzymes are inhibited, your body may not process your medication as effectively or as quickly as expected.

Research has identified potential interactions with antidepressants, certain heart medications, medications that cause drowsiness, and any medication that carries a grapefruit warning. CBD may also reduce the effectiveness of some contraceptive pills, particularly oestrogen-based ones, by the same enzyme-inhibiting mechanism.

CBD itself is not what standard drug tests look for. Tests screen for THC. Our CBD Calm range meets the legal THC threshold, meaning the risk of triggering a positive THC result is exceptionally low under normal use.

That said, if you face particularly strict drug screening (certain employment sectors, competitive sport, or legal proceedings), we'd recommend erring on the side of caution and checking with the relevant authority. The nature and sensitivity of the test determine what it can detect, and CBD products with unverified THC content from unregulated sources carry more risk than lab-certified products.

CBD is different for everyone. The strength that works well for one person might be too much or not enough for another, and the flavour that makes someone's day might not be for you. There's no shortcut to finding your sweet spot, but there's a right way to go about it: start low, go slow, and buy from somewhere you can trust.
